In 2013, Matt (co-owner and CFO) and I opened our first vape shop under the name OC Vapor Chamber (now known as Savage Vapor). A few months later, I met a fellow salesman, Jeremy, who found out I vaped and owned a store. He started bugging me to create a juice line, saying how great it would be to have quality flavors in our store at better prices than anyone else. At this time, for those of us who remember, Space Jam was on the rise, and I watched as this company became a global phenomenon. Seeing that inspired me, so I finally gave in.
Matt, Jeremy, and myself sat down and started mixing flavors in the back of our shop, which is located in Orange, California. We also needed a name for our juice line, and I am sure a lot of you out there are wondering how we came up with a name like Savage E-Liquid. Well, it was a process. The first name on the table was HardxCore Vapors. Yep, that’s right: HardxCore Vapors (which was Jeremy’s idea by the way). I offered up the name Savage E-Liquid mainly because my gamer names since I was young were usually SavageWheeler or some variation of that. Obviously, you can tell which name we ended up going with.
Our first five flavors were not the best. We had a launch date of April 1st, 2014, for which I mixed our first flavor, Walter White, in the back of our shop for customers that wanted a raspberry lemonade flavor. I nailed it in one try. The four flavors to follow were some of the worst creations ever seen to man. These E-juices eventually sold to the first retail store, Flawless, and they didn’t sell to customers at all. We didn’t see a reorder, or anything, for months. In fact, they acted like they didn’t even know us after awhile, probably to avoid telling us our juice flopped and hurting our feelings. So over the course of the next 6 months, while going to the gym every day with Jeremy, I would try his new creations and either reject them or let him know they were good. I added one more flavor to the line up as well, V. Vega. We put them on our shelves to sell in our shop for a few months while we gathered funds to truly launch our juice line.
So how did we gather funds? Well, that consisted of Matt coming into the shop early every morning and calling stores and sending out samples. After he started doing that, we began receiving orders immediately. From there, we made an action plan to hire more people, to get a better system in place than making one bottle at a time, and to figure out how to do marketing, brand development, etc.
Jeremy brought Alex, a fellow vape enthusiast, in sometime in October of 2014, a few months before we were ready to be like the big boys. He helped a lot with branding, web development, and our labels. We saw our ideas come to life. In February 2015, I quit my job, and we pulled the trigger on getting a clean room and office space. In the very beginning, it was just us four guys in the middle of an office. Every morning Jeremy, Matt, Alex, and I would stare at Yelp and a huge plastic map of the U.S. trying to figure out who we were going to call to make a sale.
Our first convention was later that month in Las Vegas. At that convention, a lot of the bigger companies gave us a lot of crap about being new, and how we weren’t going to make it because there was already too much competition. I thank all of them who told us we couldn’t do it because I know now that it just motivated our team to prove them wrong.
When we got back from that convention, we got to work hiring sales people, working on scripts, establishing marketing, and getting the proper systems in place for the growth we were about to experience. Good thing, too, because we experienced more growth than anyone could have expected or imagined. Keeping up was hard at times, but we pushed through.
Sometime in June of 2015, Josie started with our company, and I need to tell you she became the backbone of this operation. I can’t count how many hats she wears on a daily basis. She does everything from accounting to customer relations and management. Those clients who have dealt with her know exactly what I am talking about.
In July of 2015, Taylor joined the sales team and changed the way our sales were being pushed to our retailers. Taylor and I were able to sit down and brainstorm innovative ways to sell our juice, which is why I believe we have been so successful. Unfortunately, a few months later Jeremy decided to part ways with us in order to pursue his own juice company.
What Savage E-Liquid brings to the table is undeniable customer service. If our phone rings, someone is there to answer it. If our email pings, we reply promptly. You’re stuck between a rock and hard place? We’re here to help. I wish I could say our flavors beat everyone else’s, but since this industry is so diluted with great products, all I can say is that we do well in comparison. We had to fight to get our name out there and we have great passion about building this brand and the team that surrounds it.
